Teaching House Program

Project Independence — CCM's Teaching Housing program, is a type of transitional housing.  Cabarrus County has recognized the need for transitional housing for many years.  To date — transitional housing has been the missing step in the ladder from homelessness to permanent housing.

When a person or family becomes homeless they may seek the assistance of CCM's Emergency Night Shelter.  This Shelter, provided in partnership with the Salvation Army, is the only homeless shelter operating in Cabarrus County.

The jump from emergency shelter to a permanent housing arrangement is far too great for most of our homeless population.  Transitional housing is the step between emergency shelter and permanent Supportive Housing.

Heather's Experience

Heather left her husband in 2007. As a stay-at-home mom with three little girls, then ages 4, 7 and 8, she had few options and no job experience. But she knew she had to get out.

CCM's Teaching Houses program was crucial in helping her get back on her feet. .... Read more in the Charlotte Observer's August 14, 2011 article.

Another Teaching House Completed for Families in Transition

FosterKannapolis, N.C. (March, 2011) — The City of Kannapolis, Cooperative Christian Ministries and Habitat Cabarrus have completed work on a Teaching House in the Carver Neighborhood in Kannapolis. Teaching Houses are transitional housing to help families move from emergency shelters to more permanent housing. While in the program, families are provided financial counseling and other services from Cooperative Christian Ministries and Community Link to prepare them to live independently.

"There is an incredible demand for our teaching houses," said Ed Hosack, executive director of Cooperative Christian Ministries, which runs the transitional housing program. "This partnership is a very innovative way to bring together the talents and resources of multiple organizations to help families in Cabarrus County find and keep stable housing."

As a part of the partnership, Habitat Cabarrus makes the necessary repairs and renovations of the homes that are purchased by the City using HUD HOME program funds. Habitat's volunteers and donated materials help reduce the cost of the renovations. This house is one of several that will be developed in the City.

"The revitalization of our communities requires many participants, and this public-private partnership is an example of how organizations can gather their resources to benefit not only one family but put us on course to make a broader, community-wide impact," said Dean Johnson, executive director of Habitat Cabarrus.

"Each year, the City of Kannapolis receives federal money that can be spent on affordable housing projects," said Irene Sacks, director of business and community affairs for the City of Kannapolis. "We have allocated $170,000 to purchase and rehab about three homes. This partnership allows us to improve the housing stock in our neighborhoods while also addressing the need for transitional housing in this area."

Families in the Teaching House program typically stay in the program between six and 24 months. The goal is to provide a supportive environment to help the selected families regain stability and prepare themselves to re-enter market-rate housing.
