  • Thursday == 9:00 am to 12:30 pm; 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm
  • Friday == 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm

Description of Volunteer Activities


Crisis Center

Do you have a morning or afternoon a week to give to the Crisis Center?

The shifts are:
9:00 a.m.—12:30 p.m.
12:30 p.m.—4:00 p.m.

The opportunities are:

  • Interviewer

    An interviewer secures the client’s application for CCM services and processes that application as appropriate per CCM guidelines.

    The responsibilities are:

    • Take written application and verify client’s application as to: residence, employment, income, expenses, and crisis.
    • Provide the services of food and referral for clothing and household items upon evaluation per CCM guidelines.
    • Refer client, as appropriate, to staff.

  • Receptionist

    A receptionist greets the Crisis Center clients, visitors and callers, and directs them according to their need(s).

    The responsibilities are:

    • Log clients on the daily log sheet; pull file if previous record exists.
    • Assign client to interviewer.
    • Answer telephone, direct call or take message as appropriate.
    • Direct donations to the proper place or person.

  • Office Assistant

    Assist in preparation of major mailings and newsletter production.

    The responsibilities are:

    • Operate folding machine, postage meter, copier, etc.
    • Stuffing envelopes; separating for bulk mail

  • Food Pantry

    A food pantry volunteer shelves, processes and bags food ready to be distributed to CCM clients.

    The responsibilities are:

    • To accept and log in all food contributions brought to “receiving” during your work period and verbally thanking each donor.
    • Shelve food on pantry shelves.
    • Repackage foods that arrive in “bulk”.
    • Bag food per instructions.
    • Make note of buying needs in pantry.
    • Assist clients in making their food selections from a pre-defined food category list.

  • Warehouse Helpers

    Volunteers are needed to work in the warehouse at the Crisis Center.

  • Drivers

    Drivers are needed to pick up food at area grocery stores once a week.

The Opportunity House

Do you have a morning or afternoon a week to help at the Opportunity House?  Activity includes helping with client processing, filing, and assisting the office manager?

The shifts are:
8:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.
11:00 a.m.— 2:00 p.m.

Soup Kitchen

Do you have a couple of hours to give to the Soup Kitchen?

  • Assist in preparation, service, and clean up of the noon meal, weekdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Night Shelter

The Night Shelter is located at
Salvation Army,
216 Patterson St.,
Concord, NC, 28025

The Shelter is open 365 days per year and is operated by Cooperative Christian Ministry. All guests are provided a comfortable place to spend the night, dinner, breakfast, and laundry services.

A paid staff member is on duty from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. to support all volunteers.

Following is a guide for the Night Shelter volunteer responsibilities and opportunities:

  • Church Coordinator

    Coordinates Volunteers within your church which perform the duties listed below at the Shelter.

     

  • Check in Volunteers

    Volunteers work Sunday through Thursday from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m.

    Volunteers will:

    • Log all guests in the Register
    • Use a metal detector for scanning each resident for prohibited articles and will place those articles in storage.
    • Volunteers will supervise three (3) outside smoke-breaks. Times are posted.
    • Lights Out at 10:00 p.m. and entrance door is locked for guests.
    • Any exception(s) for late arrival will be defined by a staff person prior to his/her leaving for the evening.

  • Meal Volunteers

    Volunteers arrive at 7:30 p.m., with a prepared meal, and begin to serve at 7:45 p.m. (Please check with your coordinator for the current guest count so you'll know how much food to prepare)

    The kitchen closes at 9:00 p.m.

    Meal providers, please provide the following for breakfast:

    • 2 gallons of 2% milk
    • 2 large boxes of cereal
    • fresh fruit

    As of July 2007, the Daily Meal Schedule is:

    • Sunday: Meatloaf and any sides, Dessert
    • Monday: Lasagna or Pasta dish of your choice, Veggie or Tossed Salad, Dessert
    • Tuesday: Chili and Slaw, Dessert
    • Wednesday: Beef Stew and Cornbread with Veggie, Dessert
    • Thursday: Chicken Casserole or Chicken and Rice with Veggies, Dessert
    • Friday: Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Chips, Dessert
    • Saturday: Pasta Dish, Salad with Dressing, Dessert

    Tableware, Coffee, and Iced Tea are Provided.

    Shelter Guests wash the dishes.
